Homes in Fountain Hills, Troon, Pinnacle Peak, and the North Scottsdale foothills often make the landscape part of the architecture. Entrances may face mountain views, open desert, long driveways, or exposed slopes.
Those settings are beautiful, but they can place an entry door in direct sun, wind, dust, and wind driven rain. The design therefore needs to account for more than appearance.

ToggleStudy the Direction the Door Faces
A covered northern entrance experiences very different conditions from a western door receiving hours of afternoon sunlight.
Orientation affects the finish, glass, weather seals, threshold, and comfort of the adjoining foyer. Before choosing a design, observe when sunlight reaches the door and how much protection is provided by walls, trees, courtyards, and roof overhangs.
A photograph taken at one time of day cannot provide the whole answer.
Choose Glass for the Actual Exposure
Large glass areas can make an entrance feel open and connect the interior with the desert landscape. They can also admit unwanted solar heat if the door receives strong direct sunlight.
The National Fenestration Rating Council evaluates doors and glazing using measurements that include U factor, solar heat gain coefficient, visible transmittance, and air leakage.
Homeowners do not need to become engineers, but they should ask meaningful questions about the proposed glass. More glass is not automatically better, and a darker tint does not tell the complete story of energy performance.
Pay Attention to the Threshold
Wind driven rain and dust often expose weaknesses at the bottom of a door. The threshold, sweep, seals, and surrounding floor conditions should work together.
A new door cannot correct water that is being directed toward the entrance by the courtyard or walkway. Drainage and surface slope should be reviewed before installation, particularly at exposed hillside properties.
The door should close evenly against its seals without dragging or requiring excessive force.
Select a Finish for Arizona Sun
The finish contributes to both appearance and protection. Intense sunlight can make a color look lighter and more reflective than it appeared indoors.
Review physical samples at the home. Place them beside the stucco, stone, wood, and other metalwork. Look at them in direct sunlight and shade.
Proper surface preparation and a suitable protective coating are essential. The homeowner should also ask what routine care will help preserve the finish.
Balance Views With Security and Privacy
An exposed entry may be visible from a road, neighboring hillside, or community trail. Clear glass that beautifully frames a daytime view can provide a clear view into the home after dark.
Textured glass, divided panels, and strategic ironwork can preserve natural light while limiting visibility. A smaller clear section may be positioned where the homeowner can see visitors without opening the entire foyer to view.
