Understand What Each Element Does

These elements help fill a broad or tall opening without requiring an oversized moving door.
A transom that is too shallow can look like an afterthought, while very wide sidelights may make the active door appear undersized. Custom fabrication allows the proportions to suit the opening rather than relying on standard module sizes.
Decide Between Symmetry and an Asymmetrical Layout
A centered double door with matching sidelights creates a formal, balanced entrance. It can suit larger Mediterranean, Spanish or traditional estates.
A single door with one sidelight may work better when the interior plan, wall space or approach is asymmetrical. Contemporary homes can use unequal panels deliberately, provided the composition aligns with windows, rooflines or interior features.
Do not force symmetry when the structure does not support it.
Choose Glass for Light and Privacy
Clear glass provides the strongest view and can make a landscaped courtyard part of the interior experience. It may provide more visibility than the household wants when the entrance faces a road or neighboring property.
Frosted, patterned, tinted or decorative glass can soften the view.
Exterior glazed doors should be evaluated for heat as well as privacy. U factor relates to heat transfer, while solar heat gain coefficient describes how much solar heat passes through the glazing. Orientation and afternoon exposure should influence the choice.
Continue the Iron Pattern Carefully
Ironwork can flow across the door, sidelights and transom to create one composition. The pattern should remain balanced when the operating door is open and when viewed from inside.
A dense design provides more screening but can reduce light. Wide open patterns feel contemporary and allow the glass to remain prominent. Scrollwork or forged details can connect the entrance with railings, gates and balconies elsewhere on the property.

Plan Hardware and Daily Access
A grand entrance still needs to work for daily life. Decide whether one or both door leaves will be used regularly, where packages will pass and how guests approach the handle.
Custom forged pulls should be placed at a comfortable height and scaled to the door. Locks, smart access equipment and deadbolts require reinforcement and clearances that should be included in the design.
For double doors, discuss the astragal, flush bolts and sealing between the active and inactive leaves.
Check the Existing Opening
Replacing an older wood entry may reveal an opening that is out of square, inadequately supported or finished differently beneath the trim. The threshold, jamb and surrounding wall should be assessed before final dimensions are approved.
Sidelights and transoms add weight and require precise installation. Coordinate stone, stucco, flooring or electrical work with the door schedule so the opening is ready when the completed unit arrives.
