DIY Wrought Iron Railing Repairs

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

  • Most modern “wrought iron” stair and porch railings are made of aluminum or hollow steel, and they can rust or become loose as time passes. Repainting imitation wrought iron is fairly easy, and fixing loose railings is typically manageable for the average homeowner. If you have true, solid, forged wrought iron an expert may be needed. Read on to learn more.

    Fixing The Fasteners

Metal railings are usually attached to wood with screws, and to other sections of railing with bolts. If your railing is loose, check these connections first and tighten the fasteners with a screwdriver or wrench. If a bolt won’t tighten securely by hand, remove it, check for damage, and replace it with another bolt of the same size. If a screw won’t tighten into wood, try replacing it with a slightly larger screw. If that doesn’t work, find a plastic wall anchor that fits snugly into the hole in the wood and press it into the hole. The anchor will expand and grip the surrounding wood when you drive the screw into it.

    WD-40 or Similar Lubricant

If a fastener that you need to tighten or remove is rusted into place, spray it with a penetrating oil and wait 30 minutes. The oil should loosen the connection enough for you to tighten or loosen the fastener. You can buy penetrating oil at any hardware store. Penetrating oil comes in an aerosol can with a plastic straw attachment for precision spraying. Use the straw so you can spray the oil deeper into the connection.

    Anchors and Fasteners

If your railing is attached to concrete with fasteners, remove the fasteners if you have a loose connection. Take out screws or bolts with a screwdriver, or pull out nails with pliers. You’ll find plastic anchors embedded in the concrete. If these are secure and in good shape, leave them alone. If they are loose, pull them out with pliers.

    Larger Fasteners And Anchors

Pick out some screws, bolts, or nails that are slightly larger than the previous ones, and feed them through the railing post bottom and into the anchors. They will expand the anchors more and may solve your loose railing problem. If necessary, take the old fasteners to a hardware store to pick out slightly larger replacements. If the anchors are damaged, replace them with new ones of the same size.

    Using Epoxy

If the holes in the concrete have become too large for the anchors, fill them nearly to the top with a masonry epoxy. Then insert the anchors, position the railing post bottom, and insert the fasteners. Allow the epoxy to set up as per the package instructions before using the railing. Wipe away excess epoxy with a damp cloth right away.

ng and zoning requirements before you build any kind of fence.

Iron Fence Self Installation

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

Cleaning Different Kinds Of Railings

Installing wrought iron fences takes some work, tools, and knowledge and in this post we will show you how to go about doing it. It may make an excellent weekend DIY project! Read on to learn more!

1. Checking Building Codes

Some neighborhoods will have building codes that regulate the type, placement, and height of fencing.  This is especially true if you live in an HOA.  This planning may save you many problems further down the line.

2. Measuring And Planning

You must then decide where your new fence will go, how tall it will be, and what style you prefer.  This is an ideal time to call to have underground utility lines flagged so you know your post holes will not be in the wrong place.

3. Gathering Materials And Tools

In addition to the wrought iron posts, panels, and gates you will need some supplies to install a wrought iron fence.  These materials include: fasteners, post hole diggers, shovels, a level, tape measure, stakes, string, screwdrivers, wheelbarrow, gravel, and fast setting concrete.

4. Setting Outline With Stakes

Set stakes to help ensure you’ve got the right dimensions and angles for your new fence.  Drive the stakes at the corners and where it changes direction.  At each of these stakes wrap and tightly stretch  your string to show where the fence will sit.

5. Digging Post Holes

Dig post holes at corners, on both sides of fence panels, and ending points.  Most post holes should be about 2 feet deep and 6 inches in width.  Before adding your quick set concrete fill the bottom of your post holes with about 2 inches of gravel.  With all of your post holes dug mix your concrete in your wheelbarrow.  Don’t make your concrete too wet as it needs to help keep your posts standing straight in the holes.

6. Installing Fence Posts

First put the post in the post hole.  Next add the concrete to the hole.  Stop pouring your concrete when it’s about 4 inches from the top of the hole.  This is done for all of the posts and then a worker uses a level to ensure the posts are straight and set in line with the rest of the fencing. Once the posts are straight and the concrete is holding them up the top 4 inches in the hole is filled loosely with dirt.  Wait about a week for the concrete to set before moving on to installing your wrought iron panels.

7. Installing Panels

Wrought iron fencing consists of the posts you’ve already installed and panels that fit into them.  The panels are attached to the posts using screws or bolts.  Line up the panel brackets with the posts and attach the top bracket, then the bottom bracket. Do this for all of the fence panels.

8. Hanging Gates

The last step in installing your wrought iron fence is to hang your wrought iron gate.  Most times this will be a gate made for pedestrians to walk through.  If it is a driveway gate you’ll likely need to have the help of professional installers to help get it installed correctly.  This is especially true if you’re installing an automated gate with a motor.

Keeping Railings Clean

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

Cleaning Different Kinds Of Railings

Cleaning Different Kinds Of Railings

Railings can be very beautiful regardless of the material they are made from but they need to be kept clean and be safe from a structural standpoint. Read on to learn how you can clean railings made from different materials.

Powder Coated Railings

Many-a-times railings are powder-coated to ensure that the underlying materials are safeguarded, making these railings tough, corrosion-free and highly durable. Use soapy water and sponge to clean your powder-coated railings. Ensure that the soap/detergent that you use does not contain chemicals that can damage the coating. If the application is mild and does not hurt your skin when you touch it, it is most likely usable. Test the application in an inconspicuous area of your railing and observe before spreading completely.

Aluminum Railings

Aluminum railings require virtually no upkeep. Use soapy water and a soft cloth to rinse away any dust stains on your railings. Hosing down the railings with a power-hose may be a good alternative. Always dab away the extra moisture with a soft cloth and leave it to air-dry. Railings around coastal areas may be exposed to an accumulation of abrasive salts. Similarly, railings installed on a high-rise balcony may be subject to bird droppings and dust. In such cases using an appropriate solvent or cleanser may do the trick. You can lacquer your aluminum railings using a coat of car wax or floor wax. This will make maintaining your railings an easier chore, especially when they are constantly exposed to the elements.

Stainless Steel Railings

Stainless steel are available in two kinds, polished and satin. Although stainless steel is largely corrosion-proof, some unsightly marks and stains may retard the appearance. Use distilled water to clean away the white marks on steel railings. And pat down with a soft cloth or newspaper. You may also use polishing cleansers to remove tougher marks and stains. Oil and grease stains may require the use of solvents, such as acetone or alcohol wipes. It is a good idea to always use gloves and protect your hands while applying the polish or solvents to your railings.

Brass Railings

There are both solid brass railings and the brass-plated railings. These two require significantly different approaches to maintenance. All brass tends to oxidize or tarnish fairly quickly. Use warm soapy water and sponge to clean and maintain your brass railings. If the stains are tough, use a stronger variety of soap, like dishwashing soap. Using conventional polish, like Brasso, may work for solid brass. But avoid using polish on plated-brass at all costs. The brass polish will cut through the brass and leave the underlying material (usually steel) exposed.

What Is A Wrought Iron Fence?

Wrought iron can be defined as ‘worked iron” meaning any iron that has been molded by hand as part of its manufacturing process. Sometimes coming with decorative and complicated designs and at other times they can be more utilitarian in nature such as picket-style fencing. Although very secure they are not a substitute for privacy fences. They also require regular maintenance. Every couple of years they need to be sanded down and repainted. The upside is if they are well maintained they will literally last a lifetime.

Wrought iron fences are truly artisan products. Each one is handmade and they are never mass produced. This makes them more expensive but many people think the unique, elegant and stylized looks one can achieve to be worth every penny of the investment.

Wrought Iron Fence Costs

With costs starting at around $35 per square foot even a yard with a perimeter of just 150 feet is going to cost $5,250. However, if you are wanting a more elaborate design, please understand this can escalate the price drastically depending on the degree of customization and your geographical location. it is not uncommon to have costs of $100 plus per square foot, meaning a yard with a 150-foot perimeter will cost $15,000 or more.

Wrought Iron Gate Costs

Depending on the size the average costs of a wrought iron gate is $1,750 with costs ranging from $500 to $3,000 for the US in 2022. Please note the prices may vary dramatically depending on the intricacy of the design and the customization you desire.

Imitation Wrought Iron Fences

Imitation wrought iron fences can cost less than $30 per square foot but it is important to understand the material it is being made from. While composite materials and aluminum can give a great look, they cannot be customized to the same degree and you should always be fully aware of the materials your fence is being constructed from to ensure you are getting what you pay for.

Wrought Iron Fence Maintenance

A wrought iron fence should have a yearly cleaning. Simply take a garden hose and rinse the fence down, and take some mild detergent and a brush to clean away any rust. Rinse the fence again and then dry it down.

Every couple of years, it will be necessary to repaint the fence, so follow these steps:

  1. Sand and clean the fence.
  2. Apply a primer suitable for metals.
  3. Apply the paint – Spray paint works best, just make sure it is a rust-resistant paint.
  4. For optimum results perform the job on a sunny day without high humidity.
  5. Utilize a drop cloth to avoid staining.

Hints For Buyers

  • If your neighbors lack a fence, they may be willing to share the costs of bordering areas. Maybe they have been thinking about a fence as well!
  • Obtain multiple quotes. The price is important but also look at the quality of the work. Check references and see some of their previous work.
  • Make sure you check all the local planning and zoning requirements before you build any kind of fence.

Wrought Iron Vs. Steel Gates

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

If you’re looking for “Wrought Iron VS. Steel Gates,” you’re probably attempting to figure out which metal is ideal for your new home or business gates. Which is best for your property is determined by your choices, budget, and property style. Artistic Alloys & Design will build metal gates for your driveway, home, courtyard, or business in the valley using whatever metal alloy you desire. Continue reading to learn more about steel and wrought iron gates.

What Is the Difference Between Steel and Wrought Iron Gates?

Many retailers are hesitant to discuss the differences between wrought iron and steel gates. They want you to pick a style that appeals to you, pay for it, and have it installed. We custom build gates for Phoenix Valley residents and companies, and we want our customers to know all of the benefits and drawbacks of each material. Iron and steel are both elements on the periodic table, however steel is created by mixing iron and carbon. This means that iron gates are manufactured from something that appears to be naturally occurring. Steel, on the other hand, is a more modern-looking alloy.

You’re probably still undecided about which metal is best for your gates, so we’ve listed the pros and cons of each metal below. Read them and you’ll be better prepared to order your new wrought iron or steel gates.

Gates made of wrought iron

IRON GATES – Iron is a centuries-old raw material that has been mined, processed, and forged into gates, doors, and a variety of other useful objects. While it is no longer commonly utilized in industrial applications, it remains a very popular material for decorative metalwork. This is true for both commercial and residential establishments that desire to add both practical and decorative wrought iron elements to their premises, such as wrought iron entry doors. Despite the fact that steel is more durable, many property owners want to incorporate design elements that offer character.

When it comes to intricate and ornate metalwork, wrought iron has the upper hand. Wrought iron makes it easier to create highly detailed and visually appealing metal things. As a result, talented metalworkers create the more detailed fences, gates, stair railings, and pickets in wrought iron. This property of iron ensures that it remains a popular and highly sought after material for the finest gates.

Gates made of steel

STEEL GATES – Steel is another common metal for making gates, especially when a more modern appearance is sought. Steel is also popular for gates because it is stronger than wrought iron, is corrosion resistant, and does not rust. Fabricator to fabricator, the quality of steel and the durability of welds varies. This is why it’s critical to hire only the best welders and metal fabricators to construct steel gates for your property. Some gate producers employ stamped steel and low-cost fasteners and picket caps to create their gates. This is a low-cost choice, but it lacks the strength, durability, and magnificent beauty of handcrafted steel gates.

Our handcrafted steel gates will impress affluent property owners who want to invest in their home or business location.

What Makes a High Quality Rangehood

Range Hood Maintenance

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

With its ability to vent aromas, gases, and heat, a range hood is unquestionably a vital kitchen equipment. However, it, like any other home equipment, will need to be maintained on a regular basis. Continue reading to learn more about how to get the most out of your range hood.

Is the Range Hood Without Power?

Range hoods are either hardwired into the house’s mains supply or plug into a wall. When the fan and light do not turn on, it is essential to check if a fuse has blown.

The Range Hood’s Light Isn’t Turning On

The first order of business is to inspect the light bulb if the hood fan is running but the light is not turning on. Replacing the bulb in circumstances when it has been burned out. If the problem persists, the source of the problem could be a broken light switch or a faulty light socket. This is frequently available for purchase and is simple to set up. However, if the switch is broken, you may need the help of a professional repairman.

When the Air Conditioner Isn’t Working

In this case, one or both of two frequent concerns are likely to be at play. To begin with, an on-off switch may be broken, or the fan motor may have burned out. It’s preferable to employ a handyman to fix these problems unless you have good repair skills. You can use an ohm meter to check the fan switch if you want to figure out what part isn’t working. If there is no continuity, the switch is not faulty, and the problem is more likely to be the fan motor.

Other Recommendations for Upkeep

Your range hood will not only not perform at optimal efficiency if the filter is not cleaned of all the grease buildup on the fan and filter, but it will also shorten the appliance’s lifetime expectancy – not to mention create a potential fire hazard. Cleaning your range is very simple and does not take much time.

  • Locate the filter underneath the hood using the appliance instructions and carefully remove it.
  • Remove any grease from an aluminum filter with hot water and soap. Before reinstalling the filter, let it air dry.
  • Wipe the interior and outside of each blade with hot, soapy water.
  • When you’re through, put everything back in its place and reconnect the range’s electricity.

10 Reasons To Have A Range Hood

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

A range hood is an appliance that hangs above the stove, and provides additional light when you cook, and a fan so that the steam doesn’t blow into your face. Read on to learn the top ten reasons to get a range hood.

  • On top of the safety and health benefits, the comfort and ease in cleaning and cooking, the reduction of grime and smells, range hoods also increase the value of your home. Updated kitchens add close to 80 percent of the expense to the value of a house. The nicer the range hood, the higher the attractiveness of the room, and ultimately, of the house. Additionally, by removing the airborne pollutants, the range hood keeps kitchen cabinets looking new longer, and prevents cooking smells from settling into the soft furnishings around the house, which also contributes to the overall “look and feel” of the house, as well as its attractiveness to potential buyers.
  • The range hood is part of your kitchen design. Range hoods come in countless styles and custom designs, making it easy to find one that fits any kitchen. They can be blended into the existing layout of the kitchen, or created to stand out as the central showpiece. Gone are the days when the phrase “range hood” was a large, bulky metal box with a noisy fan. Today’s high-end kitchen hoods provide quiet performance while looking great.
  • When cleaning the hard-to-reach areas of the kitchen, behind the stove, or above the cabinets, there is often a sticky film coated with dust. This is caused by the grease and excess moisture in the air from cooking without a range hood. By removing mositure and grease, range hoods cut down the time you spend cleaning. Some models even have timers, providing an additional fifteen minutes of ventilation after cooking to further prevent that greasy residue. As an added benefit, removing the moisture and grease helps to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria.
  • The position of an overhead range hood provides the best lighting for cooking and you can choose what fits your needs best. Some high-end designer range hoods offer an array of lighting effects. If you’re looking to really make an impression, high-end range hood manufacturers offer some of the world’s most advanced range hoods that feature creative lighting effects, built-in LCD displays and other display qualities.
  • How often do attention-getting recipes quickly become forgotten once it’s realized how messy and foul-smelling the actual cooking process will be? Range hoods give you more freedom to experiment with those restaurant-quality dishes you’ve been dying to try.
  • Due to the smells, the stuffiness and steam, cooking can be a less than pleasurable experience. Range hoods significantly reduce those factors, so that cooking doesn’t have to be such an arduous task. Blasts of heat? Gone. Steam clouds? Sucked into the range hood instead of blowing in your face as wel las droplets of grease absorbed by the range hood’s filters.
  • By acting as a filter, cleaning hazardous pollutants, range hoods offer protection to everyone in the household. Without a range hood, everyone in the kitchen and surrounding rooms would be subjected to throat, eye and nose irritation and potential CO poisoning. The range hood offers more safety benefits than almost any other appliance.
  • There is a reason for the old adage, “if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.” Cooking produces a lot of heat, as well as generating steam and smoke. Range hoods provide relief for the cook and protection to the kitchen by cooling off the area.
  • Heating equipment and cooking appliances are the main source of carbon monoxide poisoning.Without proper ventilation, carbon monoxide can cause flu-like symptoms during short-term exposure, and difficulty breathing or even death with long-term exposure. It is required for homes to have carbon monoxide detectors in most states.
  • The most important job of the range hood is to filter out and remove hazardous air pollutants that come from cooking. Smoke, grease, and steam caused by cooking remain in the kitchen, coating the walls and being inhaled by the chef.
The operation of a typical range hood can be simply described in 3 steps:

    1. The blower (“fan” or “motor”) creates suction that draws the polluted air into the range hood.
    2. The metal grease filters (usually mesh cassettes, or “baffle” type filters on some models) capture the airborne grease particles.
    3. If the hood is installed with an outside duct (recommended), the polluted air is carried out of the house; if the hood is installed in “ductless” or “recirculating” mode, an additional charcoal filter absorbs the odors, and then the cleaned air is returned to the kitchen.

Do You Need A Range Hood?

ARIZONA’S LEADING DESIGNER OF CUSTOM FABRICATED WROUGHT IRON & STEEL PRODUCTS

You may be wondering if you need a kitchen range hood? is it essential? Read on to learn more.

There are some residential building codes requiring a range hood and some that do not. Keep the functionality of your kitchen and home in mind when considering the following:

Air Quality

One of the primary benefits of installing a range hood above your cooking stove is that it eliminates gasses and pollutants. The blower inside the range hood creates suction that extracts the polluted air from the kitchen into the range hood. In ductless models, filters capture the airborne grease particles before the purified air is circulated back to the house. For ducted hoods, the polluted air is channeled outside the house.

Removes Moisture And Heat

A range hood helps to remove excess heat originating from your cooking stove. This means that you will save more money on your heating and cooling systems since the kitchen will be slightly cooler than usual. Although it may not help cool your kitchen like an air conditioner would, it helps eliminate some of the heat created.

Lighting

The interior of a range hood is designed with optimal lighting for illuminating your cooking area. High-end designer range hood models offer a wide array of lighting effects for practical applications and aesthetics. Generally, the light in your hood allows you to cook your food properly and prevent it from burning.

Kitchen Beauty

The elegant surface of a kitchen hood enhances the attractiveness of the room. A myriad of styles and custom designs exist to choose from when buying a range hood, which makes it easier to find one that fits perfectly in your kitchen.

Lifestyle

It allows you to be creative with your style of cooking as well as try out various recipes. One of the primary reasons why most people do not like trying out recipes is because of the mixed odors of spices and other ingredients that fill the kitchen once you are done with cooking. With a kitchen range hood, you do not have to worry about unpleasant odors that may arise afterward because it is eliminated within a short time.

Repairing A Wrought Iron Railing

Depending on the size the average costs of a wrought iron gate is $1,750 with costs ranging from $500 to $3,000 for the US in 2019.
