Begin With the Direction of the Entrance
Walk the property during the hottest part of the afternoon. Note how long the opening receives direct sun, whether an overhang provides shade and whether pale walls or paving reflect heat toward the door.
A recessed entrance may need different glass from an exposed doorway facing the street. Sidelights and transoms also increase the total glazed area, which can change daylight, privacy and solar heat gain.
Provide photographs and accurate measurements during the design process. The fabricator needs to understand the opening, architecture and exposure before recommending a layout.
Ask About Glass Performance
Decorative glass affects privacy and style, but exterior glass also influences comfort. Dual pane construction creates an insulating space between the panes. Low emissivity coatings and tint can reduce the amount of solar heat passing through the glass.
Two ratings can be useful when comparing glazed doors. U factor measures heat transfer through the complete product. Solar heat gain coefficient measures how much solar energy passes through the glass. Lower ratings generally indicate less heat transfer or solar gain.
Do not choose the darkest glass automatically. Heavy tint may make the foyer feel gloomy. The aim is useful daylight without creating harsh glare or an afternoon hot spot.
Review Weather Seals and the Threshold
Air leakage around the frame can undermine an otherwise well designed door. Ask how the unit will be sealed at the jambs, meeting stiles and lower edge.
A built in steel threshold, suitable sweep and correctly adjusted weather stripping help close gaps around the opening. Double doors require careful attention where the leaves meet. The inactive door should remain firmly secured so the center seal works properly.
The opening must also be square and stable. A custom door cannot compensate for an unsuitable frame or poorly supported threshold.
Choose a Finish for Desert Exposure
Dark finishes create dramatic contrast against pale stucco, but they can become extremely hot in direct sun. Discuss the proposed color, surface preparation and protective coating with the fabricator.
A finish should suit the architecture and remain practical to maintain. Dust is more visible on some colors, while textured surfaces can take longer to clean. Irrigation should not repeatedly spray the lower frame.
Use Shade as Part of the Design
The door is only one part of the entrance. A roof projection, recessed porch or carefully positioned exterior shade can reduce direct solar exposure without hiding the ironwork.
Landscaping may also soften reflected heat, but plants should not block the swing, hold moisture against the frame or interfere with access. For an existing home, the door design should work with the shade already available.
Balance Privacy With the View
Clear glass suits a protected courtyard where the view is part of the entrance. Frosted, patterned or tinted glass may work better when the door faces a road or neighboring property.
Hinged interior glass panels can make cleaning easier and may allow ventilation when the exterior design supports that feature. Discuss screens, locks and how the glass opens before fabrication begins.
